➤ Nepal is a home of different castes, religions and ethnic groups possessing various cultural and lingual communities. Nepal has more than hundreds of languages and castes, more than ten religions in the same home. So, Nepal is usually called a multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multi-religious country. King Prithvi Narayan Shah also said that "Nepal is a common garden of four castes and thirty six sub-castes." which shows the diversities of our country. There is huge diversity in geography too.
Q.2. Why do we need to respect the diversity among Nepalese people?
➤ We need to respect the diversity among the Nepalese people to live in unity, live together in peace and social harmony. Also, diversity is our identity and our pride in the world. We have to embrace and respect the diversity that we have.
Q.3. How do Nepalese live in social harmony?
➤ Nepal is like a garden, there are different customs, religions, ethnicity, culture, lifestyle, occupation, genders etc. that are blossomed. Nepalese live with a good mutual understanding and cooperation. They respect each other's diversities, celebrate similar festivals, visit holy places together, invite in the ceremonies, etc. and promote tolerance. So, in this way, Nepalese live in social harmony.
Q.4. What do you understand by tolerance? Explain.
➤ Tolerance is the willingness to allow and accept feeling, habits or beliefs that are different from your own. In Nepal, people respect and accept all religions, languages, cultures, ethnic groups, all costumes, etc. This acceptance of diversity is what tolerance actually means.
Q.5. What is unity in diversity? How is it practiced in Nepal? Justify.
➤ Unity in diversity is an expression and maintenance of harmony and unity among the different diversities. Nepal is full of diversities in terms of its religion, ethnicity, culture, etc. Despite all these differences, people in Nepal have maintained harmonious relations and are united as the Nepalese through the respect and acceptance of everyone's existence.
Q.6. It is said that the feeling of unity among Nepalese is gradually declining. Do you agree? What should be done to maintain 'Unity in Diversity?'
➤ Yes, I agree that the feeling of unity among the Nepalese is gradually declining because of the blind adaptation of western culture, the internet, or social evils and problems like casteism, alcoholism, superstitions, inequality, back biting, disrespect, etc. which creates conflict, misunderstanding and unrest among the Nepalese.
We should do the following ways to maintain unity in diversity:
a. Respect each other's choices and socio-economic life
b. Develop tolerant behavior and social harmony
c. Education and awareness campaign
d. Modify or eliminate the social evils and problems
